ABOUT

I teach woodworking and furniture building at craft schools and community wood shops. My goal is to create a space for all to enjoy working with their hands and using tools to shape and connect with material.

Table Design

Table design is often where furniture makers begin. Two ingredients—legs and aprons—are the parameters for designing a sturdy table. As the apron holds the leg in place, the maker is free to play with proportions, scale and shadow. In class, students learn the fundamentals of wood and designing with joinery in mind. Joinery will be cut by hand, with pull saws and chisels. Join me at Fireweed Community Wood Shop and at North House Folk School to think through design while playing with proportions and curves to create a temporary console table with traditional joints.

Stool& Bench

An introduction to green wood chair making

When making stools from freshly cut wood, we split and carve the legs on the shave horse with a draw knife. Turning a chunk of wood from firewood into a perfectly round, and straight component teaches one how to best use a knife's edge and ergonomics to remove just the right amount of material. To create a sturdy seat, the legs hold up the top at compound angles. We break down the chair's stance to drill the joinery by hand and eye. Seats can be intricately carved or left as found to create a functional sculpture.
